Honey Cured Out of all the flavors Pink Spot Vapors has to offer there is one I keep coming back to again and again, and one that I miss the most when it is absent from my e-liquid line up for too long.. Groans of “Honey Cuuuuurred!! Hooooney Cuuuuured!!! Wherefore art thou, Honey Cured!..” Can be heard echoing from my bedroom walls during a restless nights slumber awaiting the arrival of this yet to be rivaled Honey Cured Tobacco flavored vape. I’m always longing for it to fill the confines of my cartomizer with its tangy, ever so slightly & pleasantly bitter, subtle honey sweetness. This bouquet is backed by a truly hard to come by, realistic, delicately dry tobacco flavor that blends together to make this a constant companion in any coupling of flavors on any given day, for any and all occasions.. I find it also mixes well with other PSV juices, as well as juices from other vendors. In all my taste testing endeavors I’ve never found a juice quite like it, nor any juice that balances out a vape pouch full of sweet juices quite so well.. Flavor This may not be a juice for beginners, since upon receiving my very first sample pack this flavor was a tad off-putting and dryer than what I was looking for at the time and I favored their regular Tobacco, USA blend, and RY8 tobacco blends.
Flavor

This may not be a juice for beginners, since upon receiving my very first sample pack this flavor was a tad off-putting and dryer than what I was looking for at the time and I favored their regular Tobacco, USA blend, and RY8 tobacco blends. It did however always quench the urge to go back to analogs during the early stages of my efforts to quit smoking [:)]

After awhile my palette would get far too accustomed to sweet and/or smooth flavors, and found myself returning again and again to Honey Cured Tobacco to awaken my taste buds for more sugary abuse.

This e-liquid is quite thin, which makes filling cartomizers a breeze, though drippers may find adding just a little VG to the mix by hand a little less likely for it to move so quickly to their battery connection. In addition, adding a touch of VG may satisfy those looking for a bit thicker visual cloud of vapor on the exhale. That is not to say this e-liquid is a slouch in the vapor production category, it holds up to any 50/50 PG/VG blend I’ve ever vaped, even on par and in some cases surpasses 60% VG juices that for whatever reason are shy on the visual vapor production.

This rings true for the specific top coil cartomizers I prefer on a variable voltage device, as well as on an ego style battery with a low resistance 306 atomizer on which the flavor, vapor production, and throat hit all hold firm.

The Hardware Part of the Review

I’d go so far as to say this juice shines on an eGo with a low resistance atty, when other juices fail to give up their nuances on anything outside of a variable voltage device at above 3.7, I find this juice shines anywhere from 3.4 well into the upper 4′s, and I detect the first hints of a burnt flavor around 4.9-5volts.

I rarely push sweet juices very far above 4 volts as they have a tendency to burn, making this juice a great choice both for weaker batteries and for those looking for a juice they can push to hotter, more analog comparable temperatures.

Last but not least would be the matter of throat and/or nasal hit. As you may or may not know, exhaling through the nose in part or even entirely may improve ones ability to taste a specific vapor’s various flavor notes.

One can also bypass the need to inhale vapor into the lungs at all by taking a drag then blowing the vapor out through your nose straight away like puff the magic dragon lol.. This will give a “nasal hit” which can be every bit as pleasant as a throat hit (dependent on personal preference) and does a pretty good job at absorbing nicotine through the nasal passages as well.

That being said and any lessons in the finer points of vaping aside, Honey Cured Tobacco e-liquid is not shy on the throat hit and has an especially pleasant and distinctive nasal exhale that should really be experienced in order to be best understood.

Conclusion

It never fails to give me that satisfaction in the inhale or exhale and leaves a dry, bold, but not overpowering aftertaste with no lingering, funky, or bad breath experiences once the PV is set down for a spell.. or rather IF it gets set down.. I’m currently looking for a beer helmet alternative to vaping so I can do all manner of things while still enjoying a hands free vape at the drop of a hat, so to speak..

Well there you have it, one very long, very thorough e-juice review. I’d like to take some time to review my other Pink Spot Vapors go to vapes, as there are many worth reviewing therein. I will however consider giving spotlight to the several other wonderful vendors I’ve sampled as well as some new up and comers, choosing a juice from each that sticks out amongst the bunch as my personal favorite and worthy of praise.

Submitted humbly for your approval and for the potential betterment of the greater vaping community at large. Be proud to be a vaper, and take any and all vaping scrutiny in stride and a big ole grain of salt.

Much love yall, vape on!

-Jesse B.

UK Vendor Doing Well for Itself Local UK news site Peterborough Today ran a puff piece on a local e-cigarette company that has grown from a side project to a multi-million pound business. The article highlighted the company’s success and how it is moving up to a 10,000 square foot facility from its humble beginnings in a space 1/10th the size. The company attributed some if its success to its deep catalog of e-liquid flavors. To add variety for those looking to kick the habit, more than 200 flavours are available, ranging from tobacco and menthol to fruit-based flavours, French tarts, gummy bears, cream soda, cherry cola and tiramisu.

Greensmoke Starts its Engines

e-Cigarette company Greensmoke announced in a recent press release that it will be once again using NASCAR to promote its brands. Greensmoke will be sponsoring the number 32 car driven by Bobby Bell in the Coca Cola 600 on May 27th. The release also made mention that the company is working on expanding its retail presence.

“Our partnership with Green Smoke was one of the highlights of last season,” states Bell. “They’re growing at a tremendous rate and are going to be moving into some big national chain stores this year. They’ve picked the perfect market to promote their revolutionary product and I’m proud to be driving with their logo on the car.”

Retail is of course a goal for most e-cigarette brands as of late. Most likely they are trying to get ahead of theFDA’s plans to begin more severely regulating e-cigarettes. I wonder if this might be the last NASCAR sponsorship since the FDA disallows sponsorships of sporting events by cigarette manufacturers.

Bollywood Goes Vaping

Let me start by saying, I’m not very familiar with Bollywood, so if I get something horribly wrong here, I pray you will forgive me. Health India came out with a story about Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor endorsing e-cigarettes on social media. It’s rather odd because I’ve seen several stories out of India that are less than fond of e-cigarettes.

Smoking’s not cool and Bollywood finally seems to have woken up to that harsh reality. Recently, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor went on record registering her support for electronic cigarettes. She posted on a micro-blogging website, “Smoking is seriously not good! There are electric cigs available now. A lot of my friends are using it.” Now e-cigarettes are one of the most successful nicotine replacement therapies. Sonam Kapoor added that she felt it was hypocritical that the government which took such stringent measures to curb smoking on screen fails to do so in the real world. (Image: HealthIndia.com)

The thing that’s interesting here is that there are a lot of US celebs who also vape. So much so that I sort of stopped bothering to cover them. However, it seems like only a handful go out of their way to really evangelize the devices. Celebs that spring to mind are Carrie Fisher, Rush Limbaugh and Katherine Heigl

Better to be Killed by the Known than Saved by the Unknown?

Regular readers of this site are familiar with the name Dr. Michael Siegel. Here’s yet another news item where you’ll hear the name. This time Dr. Siegel ran a blog post blasting the FDA’s information web page about e-cigarettes. He (sarcastically) points out the folly of the FDA recommending against the unknowns in e-cigarettes when the danger or low efficacy of alternatives are known.

“We urge smokers not to use electronic cigarettes because unlike regular cigarettes, it is not known whether e-cigarettes are safe for their intended use, it is not known what types of potentially harmful chemicals are found in these products, and it is not known how much nicotine they are inhaling when using these products. Thus, with electronic cigarettes, you get a bunch of unknowns. But with regular cigarettes, you get a sure thing. We know exactly how unsafe these products are for their intended use. We also know thousands of the harmful chemicals that are found in cigarettes. And to boot, the consumer knows exactly how much nicotine he or she is getting because those levels are tightly controlled by the tobacco industry.

Note that the image attached to the quote with the clearly impossible e-cigarette charger didn’t come from the blog post. That image came directly from the FDA page referenced by the blog post. If the FDA can’t even provide the public the right image of an e-cigarette charging, you have to ask what else they got wrong.

Deal of the Moment

MyFreedomSmokes is at it again. This time they are not only running a coupon code on DIY flavoring (code DIY15) but they also have the eGo Stardust cartos in stock for a great price. You can read my review of those cartos here. The new models in feature longer wicks for easier use and can be had for 5.95 each or a 4-pack for $20.95.

Who’s it For? Multi-taskers People with limited USB ports for e-cigarette charging Me Click here to see the adapter on ECigarette Direct’s site. So.. What is it? The Smoker’s Halo USB multi adapter is billed as an adapter that will let you plug in up to four e-cigarette chargers to charge up four ecigs at once. The reality is that this device isn’t specific to e-cigarette markets. It is a regular USB hub. The fact this is a standard USB hub works out in its favor. Primarily, because that means the multi adapter can no only be used for e-cigarette chargers, but it can also work for data devices like USB thumb drives and iPhones. It also means that unlike some of the multi-chargers out there that used to be popular for a specific style of e-cigarettes, you can mix and match the types of ecigs you charge just by plugging in the proper adapter. Mix and match 510, KR808 and eGo devices if you want, just don’t mix up the chargers! Design The ECigarette Direct adapter is set up sort of like an electrical power strip. The device is sort of a long rectangle with the four USB slots arranged in a row. The USB cable to connect to your computer is attached to the cord similar to a power cord on a surge protector.
So..

Design

The ECigarette Direct adapter is set up sort of like an electrical power strip. The device is sort of a long rectangle with the four USB slots arranged in a row. The USB cable to connect to your computer is attached to the cord similar to a power cord on a surge protector.

The most unusual feature of this adapter also carries on the surge protector motif. At the top of the device there’s a red on/off rocker switch. This is unusual for a USB hub, but a great feature for e-cigarette chargers. The switch will allow you to kill power to the USB chargers if you don’t want them running when you can’t keep an eye on them.

The adapter also has a small port on the side to attach an AC power adapter (not included) if you need to give the multi-adapter a power boost.

More Power!

For optimal results, if you’re going to charge more than one thing at once, you will want a USB output that can provide sufficient power to the attached devices.

Ideally, you’ll want a USB port that outputs at least 2 amps of current. Not all PCs are created equally. Some have no ports that provide this much power, while others only have one “high power port. For example on a Macbook, the high power port is the one closest to the laptop’s power connection.

You might have to break out the old manual or ask your weird cousin who works in an IT department somewhere to figure out which port you should use the adapter on. Otherwise, you’ll have to find an outboard AC adapter. One small problem there: there are no markings on the multi adapter indicating what type of AC adapter you will need.

Another option is you can use an AC to USB adapter if one came with your e-cigarette kit. You’ll just want to make sure it can supply enough power. Naturally, that solution would only give power and no connectivity to your computer.

Performance

As I hinted at during the who’s it for section, I found this adapter to be incredibly useful. My normal ride when working on this site and doing most of my e-cigarette “stuff” is an iMac. iMacs are notorious for having only 3 USB ports. I’m constantly swapping out between ecig chargers, USB sticks, my iPhone and so on.

As soon as I got this adapter, I pretty much plugged everything into it I could. I also expected it not to work due to lack of power.

I plugged in a standard e-cigarette charger (one of the company’s, it only seemed fair), another charger for an eGo model, my SD USB card reader and my iPhone. The iPhone was the last device since I was convinced that would be the one that broke everything.

To my great surprise, everything worked fine. The phone synced, data transferred from the memory card and the electronic cigarettes charged. Not only that, but I didn’t have any unplugged USB devices lying around any more.

I suppose I can’t really say much else about performance. This is one of these things that either works or doesn’t work.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

The Smoker’s Halo USB Multi Adapter from Ecigarette Direct works. It lets you hook up four electronic cigarette chargers (or any other USB device) at the same time and provides power, assuming your computer’s USB port can support it. The added on/off switch is a nice feature that allows you to cut the power to your chargers once they’ve done the job. You can buy one at ECigarette Direct.

Return of a Vaping Mainstay

I wrote a story a while back, more of a rant, about Steeljan closing up her virtual YouTube shop amid a storm of what she felt to be threatening responses to her videos and opinions. I thought I would just take the time here to mention that she has returned and restored all of her previously deleted videos. I’ll just leave this video about troubleshooting mods here for your viewing pleasure.

blu Takeover Analysis UK Style

The UK ECigarette Consumers Association (ECCA) wrote a short blog piece about the recent takeover of blu by big tobacco company Lorillard. The piece didn’t dive so much into any political implications, but rather market ones. blu Cigs already has a small presence in the UK which the ECCA expects will expand.

My prediction is that knowing that Walmart in the States already stock a line of disposables of the Blu brand, we may very well see Blu soon on the shelves of our local Asda supermarket. It is common knowledge that Asda has been owned and run by Walmart for some time now. If I’m right I see this as a great step towards the acceptance and awareness of the electronic cigarette and a giant leap along the idea diffusion curve, we will soon see the electronic cigarette culture go past the phase of early adoption and become common place as a form of tobacco harm reduction.

I think an aggressive expansion of the company’s already retail presence is a foregone conclusion at this point. The UK isn’t quite up against the same barriers of regulation we in the states are with the impending FDA regulations. Therefore, this may be more of a positive move in other countries where there’s not a threat of vital components like flavor and e-liquid being regulated out of the market.

Also in the UK

In a press release, UK e-cigarette company E-Lites announced the results of an informal survey it recently ran. The survey which queried around 1000 people asked about attitudes toward e-cigarettes. The results found that people both wanted the devices to be more widely available, but more information should be made available.

Some 36 per cent of survey respondents said electronic cigarettes should be more accessible to smokers, while 43 per cent agreed in principle that the recent introduction of the products represented good news for smokers. However, 47 per cent said they didn’t know enough about e-cigarettes to give an opinion, which supports calls for more education about the products’ benefits for smokers.

63% of respondents identified themselves as non-smokers. No mention was made about the percentage that vaped. I’d also to be interested to see how the 47% broke down as far as whether they thought e-cigarettes should be made more widely available. It might tell if the UK has a similar ban what we don’t understand attitude to the US.

“Special travel case”

Starter Kits

The first thing you might have noticed is that I put the phrase special travel case in quotes above there. That’s to point out, this is not the charging case. Rather Bullsmoke is referring to the box in which the kit comes. It’s a good quality heavy cardboard box with magnetic latches and cutouts for all the stuff. But, this is fairly typical packaging for most kits.

One other interesting thing I noticed is that while the company sells both shorty and manual batteries separately, the only battery option in the kit is the standard auto battery.

All Bullsmoke batteries of any ilk have the same color and graphic design scheme. The batteries are white with thin stripes running down the battery to simulate the look of cigarette paper. Each battery features the company’s vaping bull logo at the base.

Similarly, the only LED color choice is orange. This of course has no impact at all on the performance of the e-cigarette. However, it’s a personal pet peeve of mine, I dislike LEDs that might make over zealous mall security guards think I’m smoking an actual cigarette.

Choices improve dramatically in the refill cartridges department. For starters both of Bullsmoke’s starter kits come with 10, rather than 5, refills (cartomizers). While the Ranch Hand kit sticks to more traditional tobaccos, the City Slicker kit offers a more diverse choice.

The cartomizers in the Bullsmoke City Slicker do offer a couple of tobacco flavors, but also branch out into other flavors like coffee and grape. I fell in love with the apple flavor myself, it’s a nice tart apple flavor reminiscent of a fresh granny smith apple. But I digress.

The other cool part about the included cartomizers is they are color coded. While this is generally a plus in my mind, sporting the grape cartridge which is very purple sort of throws off the old-west tough guy mystique with which I keep trying to associate Bullsmoke.

The Technology

Here’s the part of the Bullsmoke Review where I talk geeky terms about thread patterns and voltage and stuff. Since I know that the target customer for kits like that may or may not be that into the technical stuff, I’ll try to keep the nerd-speak to a minimum here.

The e-cigarettes used in the Bullsmoke kits is a KR808D-1 style. This is a term that refers to the size and style of connector between battery and cartomizer (more on cartomizers in a second). There’s more to it than that, each style tends to have certain characteristics such as battery voltage and regulation and so on.

The batteries also feature some of the newest technology, which is a sealed connection. Normally automatic batteries have a hole in the top of them to allow the switch to be activated when you take a puff. This works great, but should any liquid seep out of your cartomizer and into the battery, it could damage the battery.

Sealed batteries somehow still allow the airflow to activate the e-cigarette, but lack the big hole in the middle of the battery connector. This minimizes the odds of damage from leakage.

Suffice it to say the KR808 style is a fairly popular one in this class of e-cigarettes. The batteries are 180mAh, which refers to the size of the cells. Again, this is pretty standard with this style of e-cigarette.

As I mentioned several times, the Bullsmoke gear uses cartomizers rather than separate cartridges and atomizers. The short story is I feel cartomizers are better, especially in starter kits than atomizers. They perform better and aren’t as messy.

The Bullpen Charging Case

The Bullpen is a case that houses its own battery and allows you to charge one of your e-cigarette batteries on the go. Simply stick the battery in the case, hold down the button for a few seconds to start charging and then toss it in your pocket.

A case like this is fantastic for people who may not always be around a computer or wall outlet for charging. If you’re out on the town, you have a freshly charged battery ready to go when your first one putters out.

To be honest, I’ve reviewed this case before. The Bullpen charging case is the same case as Smokeless Image’s Volt personal charging case.

The good news is that it’s also my favorite portable charging case. It’s a very compact and sleek-looking case. The case is about the size of an audio cassette (I just dated myself there, didn’t I?)

The replaceable battery in the charging case will recharge one of your e-cigarette batteries around three or four times. Charge time is around 3-4 hours.

A word of warning, the top doesn’t flip up, rather it slides open. Don’t try to force it, or bad things might happen.

The only downside of the case is that it is a separate purchase and not included with any of the standard Bullsmoke starter kits.

Click here to check out the Bullpen on Bullsmoke’s site.

Performance

As I mentioned a bunch of times already, the Bullpen uses pretty standard KR808 batteries. This is important because I feel that the 808s are probably the best performing styles as far as traditional cigarette sized devices go.

Especially on a freshly charged battery, these e-cigarettes produce a good amount of thick vapor. The temperature is good, not too warm, nor cold. Throat hit is also very good, when you vape, you know you’re inhaling something with these.

Flavor of course is subjective. With the City Slicker I’m sure you’ll find flavors you love as well as ones that you detest. I thought the apple was great, and the grape was pretty decent. I only tried one of the tobaccos, the Texas. I found it to be on the sweet side, but not terribly unpleasant.

While on the subject of the cartomizers, here’s one thing to note. Like pretty much everyone, Bullsmoke exaggerates the equivalency when it comes to how long a cartomizer lasts.

Bullsmoke claims the equivalent of 25 cigarettes. I’ve found that at first, this might only be slightly high, but as you sort of get into a routine with vaping, you’ll find you take longer drags, which lowers that equivalency pretty quick.

A more realistic count is probably somewhere between 7-15 cigarettes depending on how you roll.

Battery life is sort of the same deal. The company claims somewhere between 3 hours and a day (or more). I’m a pretty heavy user, so I tend to blow through one of the batteries in less than two hours. Light users will probably still go through two battery charges in a day.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

The Bullsmoke City Slicker kit is a typical and competent basic e-cigarette starter kit. The biggest draw of the company’s offering is the City Slicker kit which gives you 10 different pre-filled cartomizers to sample the company’s flavor offerings. The company also sells one of my favorite portable charging cases, a must for people on the go or out on the town. You can check out Bullsmoke’s site here.

Variety of flavors available in the City Slicker kit

The Bullpen portable charger is a personal favorite

Pink Spot Vapors is a e-liquid vendor whose base of operations is out of America’s playground in Las Vegas. Owners Penn and Sandi got their start as bartenders and cocktail mixologists in the always popular nightlife scene of Vegas.

This becomes apparent upon perusing their signature flavors; many of which are inspired by distinctive and flavorful cocktails served up in area clubs, lounges and casinos alike to those looking for a delicious ways to take in their evenings portion of alcohol. One can even have any particular flavor “on ice” with just the right amount of menthol flavor added for those of you who are into that sort of thing.

Pink Spot Sample Packs

In the pursuit of all day vapes I’ve gravitated towards sample packs when it comes to trying out new vendors, as I wouldn’t like to be put off by an entire distributor simply because one or two flavors were not to my liking. Otherwise I’d run the risk of missing out on an all day vape in the process of building my vapers pallet, while also trying to keep an eye on retaining the girth of this vapers wallet.

I was pleased to find that their sample packs were well priced & offered six 6ml bottles of any flavor of your choosing, in a common 50/50 PG/VG ratio. The nicotine strengths range from a very strong cigar like strength of 36mg (a bit strong for most people), to what was my personal starting point of 24mg, and so on in intervals of six milligrams all the way down to zero.

The few exceptions to the nicotine strength choices is their tobacco flavors which for some reason seem to only go down to 12mg. Also it’s interesting and encouraging to note that not only will PSV put personalized messages on your bottles for you at no additional cost, but they will even go so far as to personalize your nicotine levels for you in intervals of a single milligram.

Yes, I actually ordered bottles of 23mg e-liquid from them for the lols. While this may seem a trifle outlandish and unnecessary, for those looking to ease off of nicotine as gently as humanly possible this may just be the easiest transition gradually from 24mgs to 8mg or even 0mg e-liquid that is presently available in the industry. Of course one could use an online mixing calculator and mix up their own batches of e-liquid. However DIY liquid is quite a venture to partake in for someone new to vaping and is not advisable unless you are seriously up on your nicotine safety lessons & willing make a few crummy batches in the name of progress.

Shipping and Service

It’s important to note they have speedy delivery save for maybe during the holidays when everyone experiences delays. The cost of shipping is well within standard, reasonable shipping costs, and arrive in flat rate priority shipping boxes. No first class envelopes to possibly get smashed while in route, nor will it likely take 7-10 days to get to your door increasing the potential for over exposure to the elements.

In my personal experience PSV orders tend to show up at my door earlier than other orders placed that same day, which is saying something as I’m on the east coast and they are on the other side of the country from my current abode.

To top things off all purchases come with a hand written and oft-times personalized letter, especially if you’re a return customer or an active member of their Facebook page. It’s just another way to let the customer know they care, and I for one enjoy a bit of banter from a vendor I frequent.

The icing on the cake is the fact that every bottle I’ve received has been filled to the brim, the bottles are strong and very pocket worthy, the label is attractive and has a “born on date”, the caps don’t rattle or leak and form a perfect seal regardless of the bottle size, and each order comes with a single 3ml tester bottle which is picked at random which can really open up ones tastes to e-liquid flavors one wouldn’t have considered ordering off-hand.

Flavor Selections

One such sample led me to order a 30ml bottle of the same kind with my next order, and it’s worth mentioning that they just added 120ml bottles for those who REALLY like a particular flavor [:)]

At Pink Spot Vapors there are a plethora of flavors to choose from, at least a dozen of which I would order without hesitation. I’d do so knowing full well from past experiences that each batch will be practically identical to the last one.

This is not always the case with other juice vendors for one reason or another. While getting a bad batch of an off flavor or quick to expire bottle once in a while won’t necessarily force me to turn my back on a vendor for good, it is a great feeling knowing when I order from PSV I will get exactly what I was expecting every time.

They have “take it to the bank” flavors and because of this I don’t hesitate trying a new flavor that sounds right up my alley or even something more exotic. Knowing with each purchase I will get to try something new in the form of their 3ml free sample bottle. Such free samples are definitely a selling point that a few other vendors provide as well, and it is my opinion that if more vendors would practice this form of advertising they would benefit in return sales and expanded fan base.

The juice from PSV also seems to age quite gracefully and retain its flavor, color, and consistency over the period of the many months I’ve had some of the bottles in my arsenal. Though I must say PSV juices do tend to get vaped rather quickly, due to their sheer decadence and the fact that they are thinner than my usual VG heavy juice collection.

They’re always trying something new, and have coupon codes and special promotions throughout the year such as fancy mod give aways, and have had special events where in the spirit of Las Vegas they will double ones order if it ends in 00, which I believe they called “double down Fridays” [:D]

My opinions are my own and not influenced in any way shape or form, I am not nor would I ever accept money or bribes of any kind to sway my reviews one way or another, and while this was a very positive review of said vendor it merely speaks to the quality and customer service of PSV. Trust that if I had an issue with a vendor or their products I’d politely state such things within the confines of the review. This being my “first official review evaaaar” I’m open to constructive criticism, and anything I’ve overlooked or expanded too much upon I’d attempt to rectify in future reviews to come.

The only even remotely negative thing I could think to say about PSV is the fact that their juice costs nearly a buck per milliliter, which is a tad high, and is a tad thin and quicker to vape than some e-liquids, but in all honesty you get what you pay for in this case with the flavors balanced just exactly so..

Submitted humbly for your approval and for the potential betterment of the greater vaping community at large. Be proud to be a vaper, and take any and all vaping scrutiny in stride and a big ole grain of salt.

Much love yall, vape on!

Vision Vivi Nova Design

Anyone who’s used the Vision Stone CE2 tanks (or read my review) will recognize some striking similarities in the Nova. For the benefit of those not familiar with the precursor to the Vivi, here’s some basics.

This series of cartomizer tanks takes a modular approach. The primary pieces are a top cap (with drip tip) the actual tank, which is a thick plastic tube featuring graduated markings for e-liquid and the bottom assembly which has attached to it the heating coil and air tube pieces (the engine). The top and bottom of the tube are threaded allowing the caps on each end to screw off and on.

So far that’s the same as the original Stone tanks. Here’s where things get radically different. The Vivi Nova’s engine is a big update from the Stone’s.

Rather than a heating coil perched atop a thin tube (that was prone to movement and leaking), the Nova features a very thick center post that terminates not in a heating coil, but a 510 threaded female connector.

That connector is designed to receive the special atomizer heads. These heads are the distinguishing feature of the Vivi nova. The idea is that you can easily swap out a bad atomizer for a good one quickly.

Or, if you’re indecisive, you can easily swap out heads of different resistance. The clearomizer comes with three heads each with a different resistance. A 2.4Ω head comes attached to the base and 1.8 and 2.8 resistance atomizers are also included in the box.

Personally, I would have preferred if it just had 3 of the same resistance atomizers included since I’m not sure how much people really tend to hop around.

Each atomizer head simply screws into the post attached to the bottom cap of the Nova. The atomizers have four wicks sticking out. Oddly, one of the four wicks just sits on top of the atomizer rather than running through the heating coils like the other two.

Holding all that in place is a small metal washer and silicone cover. When the top is screwed on the device it forms a seal with the silicone cap of the atomizer preventing e-liquid from seeping into the assembly.

The seal works well since I’ve often filled the tank beyond the top marked graduation of 2.8ml. The total capacity of the Vivi is around 3.5ml.

Filling and Leak Testing

I’m going to go a little out of order here for a moment. I want to talk about leaking. The Vision Stone tanks I tried before generally performed alright, but they were plagued with leaks. Some users didn’t get leaks, but I have several and they all leaked and gurgled.

To be fair, I bought a 3rd generation of the Stone, but haven’t used it yet, so maybe that one doesn’t leak. But, suffice it to say I was a little nervous that the Vivi Nova would have the same problem.

I am quite happy to report I experienced no leaks at all with the Nova.

The thing is tight as a drum, nary a drop has come out of the connector of this thing. Before I move on to the actual performance, we’ll make one more stop, filling.

The Nova does share one trait with the Stone. Both are dead simple to fill. Just unscrew the cap, tilt it a little bit and drip e-liquid directly into the tank from the bottle. The only thing you have to be mindful of is to avoid dripping any liquid directly into the hole on the top of the atomizer.

If you’re averse to carting syringes around, this might be a good choice for you.

Ok, now we can talk about performance. In my testing I kind of went to either end of the spectrum with the atomizer heads. I tested the 2.8Ω and 1.8Ω heads and pretty much ignored the 2.4 version.

I tested each at a variety of voltages using a ProVari and also the eGo-C Twist just for kicks (it looked kinda silly on the twist).

Presumably, through the magic of variable voltage, you would think that by setting the voltage to match the resistance of each atomizer, you’d achieve the same wattage and therefore, the same results. In practice, that didn’t actually happen.

To put it simply, I found the higher resistance atomizer to be pretty squirrely. It started to get really rough around the edges at around 4.5v. I didn’t get a burnt taste, but the throat hit became very scratchy at that range.

Yet, the low resistance atomizer performed like a champ at 4.2v. That’s nearly 10 watt as compared to the 7 and change I could get out of the higher resistance setup.

It makes me think that perhaps the high resistance atomizer head wasn’t quite up to snuff, and your results might vary on that one. To give the Nova the benefit of the doubt, I’ll focus on the lower resistance option from this point on.

I also noticed that this is the type of device that sort of starts out mediocre but improves as you break it in. I got optimal results after running half to a full tank through it.

The performance of the low-resistance option is quite good. Especially at the higher voltage. I was actually able to crank it up beyond 4.5v, but I found the performance bump was fairly insignificant after 4.2v.

Flavor reproduction was excellent as was throat hit. There was plentiful vapor as well, more so when I made a slight modification I’ll get to in a minute. One thing I found interesting, even with the high amount of heat produced by the coils, the vapor never got really hot.

Modifications

About that modification I mentioned. While I try to review stuff out of the box, this was a pretty simple thing, and I found it sort of odd and worthy of mention.

Vapor production was good out of the box, but it turns out removing that odd unattached wick from the atomizer helps increase vapor production. Which makes me wonder exactly what that fourth wick was supposed to do in the first place.

The procedure is dead simple. Just pull the silicone cap off the atomizer, the little metal washer should stay in the cap. Grab the offending wick and gently pull. If you grabbed the right one, it will come right out. Then make sure the washer didn’t get turned around and just stick the cap back on.

There’s an even more interesting modification out there. To be honest, it’s sort of beyond the scope of this review (and my hand-eye coordination) but I thought it was worthy of mention. There’s no solder in the atomizer, so you can replace the coil wire yourself if you so desire. Here’s a YouTube video of someone doing just that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWxHn8rl5dU

The modification aspect should make this clearomizer tank appealing to both those new to tanks and modders alike.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

Vision’s Vivi Nova cleromizer tank resembles the Vision Stone, but don’t let the looks deceive you. The Nova packs a ton of innovation and convenience. Changeable heads mean the experience can be customized, and the whole unit doesn’t need to be tossed out when an atomizer bites the dust. Simple fills and leak-free design should appeal to many, and modders might like the fact you can completely rebuild the atomizers. Perhaps this will give the venerable dual coil tank a run for the money.

Disruptive Passenger Pleads Guilty

Remember that guy I reported on a while back? The one that got arrested for disrupting a flight and among other things having an e-cigarette? According to the Northwest News, that individual has had his day in court.

The man was released with the fine and time served. Here’s the thing, the news headlines still say this was an e-cigarette incident. They still say this despite later reports of the incident stating that the guy verbally abused a flight attendant and started screaming Osama bin Laden’s name. Of all the things to focus on, they pick the least crazy.

Innokin Lets New Feature Slip

Innokin has been promoting its upcoming iTaste variable voltage e-cigarette for a while now. While the company has been sprinkling press releases around, many details have been unknown. In a press release announcing a new vendor, however, a full list of features was published as well. Some stuff is expected, some are new features.

Intelligent microprocessor controlled variable voltage VV electronic cigarette
Adjust from 3.3 – 5.0 volts in .1 volt increments
Intelligent cartomizer matching – the iTaste will automatically recommend a suitable setting for the attached cartomizer/atomizer
Advanced magnet technology allows fast cartomizer/atomizer connections
Long life 800 mAh polymer Li-Ion rechargeable battery with high power discharge
Puff Counter – monitors number of puffs taken
On/Off safety switch prevents button being pressed during storage

While many of these features can be found in some of the newer factory devices like the eGo-C Twist, one feature caught my eye. See item number three. That one hasn’t been mentioned until now as far as I know. It should be interesting to see if the matching feature is useful or another quirky, but useless feature.

Springfield Rights a Wrong

I previously reported that Springfield, Missouri was kicking around the idea of removing e-cigarettesfrom its existing ban. That finally happened according to this story in the News-Leader. A series of amendments to the ban which includes removing e-cigarettes entirely was unanimously passed recently by the city council.

The City Council unanimously approved a series of amendments to the city’s smoking ban on Monday, granting exemptions to existing Springfield tobacco shops, cigar bars and private clubs.

Bingo halls also gained an exemption under certain circumstances, and electronic cigarettes and theatrical performances no longer are covered by the ban.

I’m going to put my optimistic hat on for a minute here. If Springfield can come to the realization that its original ban on e-cigarettes was a hasty knee-jerk reaction, maybe other communities can do the same.

Not Exactly a Ringing Endorsement

The American Journal of Nursing ran a piece examining the pros and cons of e-cigarettes. While the article dedicated a good portion to the FDA’s talking points, it did also link to the FDA study which paints a different picture. The article also at least did not directly come out and recommend business as usual either.

Only time will tell if e-cigarettes are safer than cigarettes and a viable option as an aid to quit smoking. In the meantime, nurses can help patients by being knowledgeable about these devices so they can provide accurate guidance regarding their use. By keeping up to date on e-cigarettes, nurses can offer informed advice when a smoker asks about using these devices as an aid for quitting smoking.

Understandably, the Journal would want to provide accurate information, however, at best the FDA website info on which the article is based contains outdated and debunked information. For some reason, retractions there seem slow in coming. I suppose I put the Journal’s article directly in the “meh” category of articles.

Surprise Twist

A local TV station out of Charleston, SC aired a story with the ominous title Medical Myth “Are e-cigarettes safer than regular cigarettes?” I thought I’d be ranting against another media story, but there was a surprise twist.

According to the Director of the tobacco Research Project at the Hollings Cancer Center the vapor that is consumed while smoking an e-Cigarette contains approximately 20 ingredients including nicotine and glycerine. Dr. Michael Cummings says when ingested sensibly and in accordance with proper labeling most of these ingredients are less harmful for human consumption than ingredients found in traditional cigarettes, nicotine was once used as an insecticide.

It didn’t take long, I’ve literally quoted half the story up there. Of course that last phrase is sort of out of place in a story that otherwise states that e-cigarettes are indeed not as harmful as regular cigarettes. Not that I’ll complain too much, good press is good press.

Joye eGo Twist Design

At first blush, there does not seem to be much difference at all between your garden variety eGo and the eGo-C Twist. You’ll find the same design in both including the iconic double threaded top. Like most new eGos, the Twist has a 5-click on/off feature.

If you have a standard 650mAh eGo battery, you’ll notice immediate difference. The Twist which also carries the same mAh rating is considerably longer than a regular 650. The eGo Twist is much closer in length to a 1000mAh eGo. That extra circuitry had to go somewhere.

The other difference is much more subtle. There is what appears to be a cap on the bottom of the Twist. This looks like the cap found on USB pass-through versions of the eGo battery.

If you look very closely you’ll find some small markings on the lower part and battery and the cap. These markings are to show the current voltage setting of the eGo Twist.

The Twist allows you to adjust the output voltage between 3.5 and 4.8v by (wait for it) twisting that cap.

The eGo-C Twist uses what’s known as boost/buck technology to adjust the voltage using a single 3.7v battery. This is the same technology found in the ProVari and Lavatube.

The great thing about this technology is that it keeps the voltage consistant throughout the battery’s charge cycle. Even if you just sort of set it to a single voltage and forget about it, it will maintain that setting the whole time.

Joyetech eGo-C Twist Performance

Let me just jump to the first thing I look for when evaluating a variable voltage device. Can it run a dual coil cartomizer at the highest voltage setting?

No.

In that regard, the eGo-C Twist behaves more like the Lavatube than the ProVari. When I tested the loaded voltage output using a dual coil, the Twist dropped the voltage down to 3.7v despite being set for higher voltages.

While that sort of bums me out, I’m not quite ready to call that feature a deal breaker. First of all, 3.7v is still better than a typical eGo’s output of around 3.4v. There are a lot of eGo-specific dual coil cartomizers out there that will benefit from this move.

The other thing is that it doesn’t seem like pushing a lot of voltage through a dual coil is necessarily the eGo Twist’s niche in the first place. I really see this as a somewhat more simple device than that.

It’s a small and elegant device that provides some degree of customization to the vaping experience and not a flat-out high performance machine. It does a good job of sticking to the selected voltage and maintains all the characteristics of an eGo device.

I did notice the occasional migration in voltage where it would drop up to .1v from time to time. It didn’t happen often, and I never saw it go over voltage, but it is maybe a little less precise than the ProVari.

Unlike the Lavatube, the eGo-C Twist held the voltage where it was supposed to be until the battery drained and shut off.

If nothing else, the Twist is great from the standpoint of outputting a consistent voltage.

From a battery life standpoint, despite running it at higher voltages, I found that the life was comparable to a standard 650mAh eGo. I got several good hours of moderate use between 4.0 and 4.5v. I didn’t crank it to the max due to that whole dual coil thing I mentioned earlier.

If I wanted to pick nits, I suppose I could bemoan the fact that there was no LCD readout, but that would have added to both the size and the price of the Twist.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

The Joyetech eGo-C Twist is an easy to use and accurate variable voltage eGo e-cigarette that adjusts with a simple twist. I think if you are an eGo fan, you should have at least one of these things in your arsenal. You can buy one at MikeUSA for $20.99. It’s hard not to add one to your eGo collection at that price.

If you are looking for something to max out your dual coil cartos, however, you’ll probably want to keep looking. The End of the World as We Know It? I hope I’m just being alarmist on this one, I’d rather be considered an alarmist than some sort of revolutionary voice posting about contraban. This link to an FDA proposal request tweeted by @GregCASAA caught my eye. It’s what is called a “sources sought” publication which is part of the government contracting process. Basically, the FDA is putting feelers out to find companies capable of searching for and reporting on tobacco advertising in online and offline publications (gulp!). More importantly, the FDA clearly telegraphs their intention to play in our sandbox, and soon. On June 22, 2009, the President signed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (Tobacco Control Act) into law (Public Law 111-31). The Tobacco Control Act amended the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) and granted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to regulate the manufacture, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products. Currently, FDA regulates the following tobacco products: cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco, and smokeless tobacco. See Section 901(b) of the Act. The Act allows FDA to issue regulations asserting jurisdiction over other tobacco products, such as cigars, cigarillos, e-cigarettes, and hookahs, among others. FDA expects to issue a deeming regulation in summer 2012 to cover other tobacco products. I needn’t point out the FDA rules against cigarettes are pretty restrictive. I also know there have been other scares about the FDA and looming regulation. But, this is the first time that there’s been such a specific timeline. This is also a very specific move to go after online advertising, which of course has me a little uneasy as well. Canada Trying to not be Like Us Attempting to head off looming [...]

Originally posted: e-Cigarette News Roundup 5-7 – Say something

I needn’t point out the FDA rules against cigarettes are pretty restrictive. I also know there have been other scares about the FDA and looming regulation. But, this is the first time that there’s been such a specific timeline. This is also a very specific move to go after online advertising, which of course has me a little uneasy as well.

Canada Trying to not be Like Us

Attempting to head off looming government regulation like the US may soon face, a group of Canadian vendors has formed an industry group. The ECTA of Canada website was launched with the specific aim of monitoring quality controls of its member companies to ensure its compliance with existing Canadian law.

Canada’s Electronic Cigarette Industry – like so many others around the world – has operated under a “Wild West” principle for far too long. This is largely because of regulatory uncertainty as policy-makers try to work out what type of products ecigs are. Canadians deserve better. Along with most electronic cigarette product vendors and consumers in Canada, we recognize the need for appropriate regulation of the Industry. We believe it is time to put an end to the myths, rumours and regulatory uncertainty surrounding these products & their safety.

The group has already launched its first audit of members and is awaiting publications of reports which it will provide to Canadian officials. As of right now, the group consists of ten founding members. Hopefully this group will be inclusive and have some success in swaying opinion in the North.

Mad as Hell

Set off by the recent ban attempt by one small New England town, e-cigarette magazine site Spinfuel went off on a spectacular rant against bans. The article mentions the need for e-cigarette companies to step things up and ban together to head regulators off at the pass.

In the coming weeks I will be attempting to jab a cattle prod into the sides of eCig users and eCig makers so that we get the chance to fight back before its too late. eCig companies need to band together, form a real lobby, and get those lobbyists to Washington and begin fighting for the cause. As far as I know, the current organization(s) out there have been completely ineffectual at protecting the right of eCig companies or their customers. It’s time for a real lobbyist.

Image: imagerymajestic / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

I pretty much agree with the notion that the industry needs lobbying efforts. Users also need to be prodded, although I would probably have directed consumers over to CASAA’s website. The thing is, I wonder now with the blu acquisition if we have not entered a phase of the game where the lobbying rules might be different now due to big tobacco’s involvement.

Ain’t no Party Like a Ban Stick Party

I just got an e-mail from the founder of the Utah Vapers Club. They are planning a big shindig ahead of July 1st when the state’s vaping ban kicks in. The idea here is that they plan on going out with a bang through a series of meets across the state.

We are less than 24 hours past our May VapeMeet and I’m already working on planning our last big hurrah. As you all are likely aware, Utah passed one of the first indoor vaping bans of 2012 which goes into effect on July 1st. In a final show of force and protest, we will be hosting our final public bar vape meet on Saturday June 30th. We will be heavily publicizing this one through as many media outlets that will allow it and inviting all media to join the event. We are also making this a state-wide event with 3 locations throughout Utah; Salt Lake City, Ogden.

If you’re a vaper in Utah, mark your calendar for the 30th and get ready to get your party on.
